About the ArtWork: There are places in the world that feel as though time is holding its breath — and Cuba is one of them. Walking through Havana was like stepping into a sepia-tinted photograph from my parents’ heyday — the late 1950s — when revolutions, romance, and rebellion burned bright across the world.

The air hums with stories here: of music that never stopped playing, of colour that refused to fade, and of people who learned to live fully within the limits imposed upon them. Beneath the turquoise balconies and wasted pastel façades lies a history of courage and control, of resistance disguised as rhythm.

My partner and I looked like locals — Spanish and Yoruba features blending easily into the street scene — and so found ourselves under the watchful gaze of an undercover government agent. His questions were polite, his posture rigid; the quiet reminder that 'freedom' here for the locals still moves within invisible boundaries.

And yet, as the Sun lowered into the amber haze of Havana Square, this view from the ground floor outdoor seating of Hotel Inglaterra, where we were sat when 'questioned', locals are strictly forbidden... I was reminded that paradise is rarely perfect. The picture-postcard sunset scenery, the swaying palms, are only the skin — beneath them lies a complex anatomy of human will, loss, and societal restriction.
